How a Failing Expansion Valve Affects Your System
- Restricted flow — a clogged or stuck-closed valve starves the evaporator of refrigerant, resulting in poor cooling and compressor overload
- Uncontrolled flow — a stuck-open valve floods the evaporator, causing liquid refrigerant to reach the compressor and causing serious damage
- Contamination damage — debris and moisture from a failed compressor or saturated receiver drier can clog or corrode the valve's precision internals
When to Replace Your Expansion Valve
- Compressor failure — metal debris from an internally failed compressor travels downstream and can damage the expansion valve
- Poor cooling with no obvious cause — a malfunctioning expansion valve is a common culprit when the system is charged but not cooling properly

- R134a conversion — some R12-era expansion valves are not compatible with R134a and should be replaced during conversion
