Agricultural & Heavy Equipment AC Expansion Valves
The expansion valve is the precision metering device at the heart of your AC system's cooling performance. It controls exactly how much refrigerant flows into the evaporator, maintaining the precise pressure differential that allows the system to absorb heat from your cab and deliver cold air. When it's working correctly, you don't notice it. When it fails, your AC system suffers — and so does your compressor.
Quality Farm Supply stocks expansion valves for a wide range of tractors, combines, skid steers, and heavy equipment — direct-fit replacements built to OEM specifications.
How a Failing Expansion Valve Affects Your System
- Restricted flow — a clogged or stuck-closed valve starves the evaporator of refrigerant, resulting in poor cooling and compressor overload
- Uncontrolled flow — a stuck-open valve floods the evaporator, causing liquid refrigerant to reach the compressor and causing serious damage
- Contamination damage — debris and moisture from a failed compressor or saturated receiver drier can clog or corrode the valve's precision internals
When to Replace Your Expansion Valve
- Compressor failure — metal debris from an internally failed compressor travels downstream and can damage the expansion valve
- Poor cooling with no obvious cause — a malfunctioning expansion valve is a common culprit when the system is charged but not cooling properly
- Complete AC overhaul — replacing the expansion valve alongside the compressor, receiver drier, and O-rings ensures the new system starts clean
- R134a conversion — some R12-era expansion valves are not compatible with R134a and should be replaced during conversion
For a complete system refresh, pair your new expansion valve with a compressor, condenser, receiver drier, and full O-ring set — or shop our complete AC overhaul kits for everything in one order.
